Gloria Govan, bottom right, posted a picture before heading out on a trip to celebrate her birthday which shows former Knicks coach Derek Fisher, back row second from left, smiling in the background. She has since removed the post from her Instagram page.
TORONTO — Who says Derek Fisher is not committed to the triangle?
The former Knicks coach was spotted in an Instagram post from Gloria Govan, the estranged wife of Fisher’s former teammate Matt Barnes.
Barnes allegedly socked Fisher in the mouth in October for dating Govan, the reality TV personality who is the mother of his children.
In Govan’s post, she is in front of a large group boarding a flight, with a smiling Fisher in the back exhibiting an emotion rarely seen during his Knicks days — happiness.
Govan indicated they were partying before apparently heading off for vacation.
“We in here,” Govan wrote in the post, which was quickly deleted. She accompanied the post with numerous hashtags: #internationalflight #birthday #celebration #tipsy #family #hellasleepy #lit.
Fisher will have a harder time explaining this one as a visit to his children, which was his excuse for being on the West Coast and away from the Knicks in October. But Fisher doesn’t have to answer to the team anymore. His former teammate with the Lakers could still be an issue, though.
Barnes, who was fined nearly $ 100,000 by the NBA for the October incident and its aftermath, has been holding a clearly expressed grudge and indirectly said he’ll do it again.
“I know I got to keep my mouth shut because he’ll run and tell,” Barnes, a 35-year-old forward with the Grizzlies, said before playing Fisher’s Knicks last month. “So we’re focused on playing. But when I’m retired, him and I will cross paths again.”
Derek Fisher and Phil Jackson have something in common: They’re love of the triangle.
Fisher’s reputation and standing in New York’s locker room went south because of the incident, allowing for the plausibility of rumors — while unfounded at this point — that he was romancing different players’ significant others.
One of his former players, Tim Hardaway Jr., was prompted to ask his girlfriend if the rumors of her and Fisher were true.
“I’ve seen those. No reaction over here. I know all those are lies. They are going to do whatever they can, especially here in New York (with the media),” Hardaway told reporters earlier this season. “So I am not even worried about that. I had a talk with my girlfriend. If you ask me, it is not true at all. I am completely positive with her judgment and what she said.”
Although Jackson acknowledged the Barnes fight was “embarrassing for us and Derek,” he said it had nothing to do with the firing. Fisher had made the jump directly from playing to coaching last season and never seemed comfortable. He finished with the worst winning percentage of any Knicks coach who lasted over one season.
According to ESPN, Fisher will be paid the balance of this year plus $ 8.5 million over the next two years.
“We made the move to relieve Derek of his coaching duties,” Jackson said. “I use that word really carefully because I know it’s a relief for him, taking away some of that stress from the job.”
It also apparently allowed Fisher to have more fun.
