Report: Red Sox place Castillo on outright waivers

The Boston Red Sox have placed outfielder Rusney Castillo on outright waivers, sources tell MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

Castillo was once again optioned to Triple-A on Friday, and with a $ 72.5-million contract, a viable suitor might prove difficult to find.

He’s owed more than $ 11 million in each of the next three seasons and also has an option for over $ 14 million in 2020. If a team wants to take a chance on him, they’ll have to take on his contract, too.

After getting a shot last season, Castillo batted .253/.288/.359 in 80 games while hitting five home runs. This year he’s only appeared in nine games, getting eight at-bats.

This season, he’s hitting .245/.304/.320 at Pawtucket.
